Dem-Master were appointed to carry out the demolition, site clearance and associated works at the former West Calder High School, Limefield, Polbeth,West Calder, EH55 8QN.

The former school comprised various buildings ranging from single to three storey structures over the terraced site.

The works involved:

  • Asbestos removal
  • Soft Strip
  • Demolition Operation
  • Processing of Arisings
  • Slab & Foundation Removal
  • Crushing
  • Removal of 3G Pitch
  • Backfill & Grade
  • Removal of Materials
  • Recycling

The site was located within a residential area on the outskirts Livingston. The site itself was situated off the A71 which is a busy thoroughfare for both road users and pedestrians.

The railway line was situated to the south of the site and a residential development on vacant land to the east.

As always, our neighbours were given newsletters to inform them of our works prior to commencement.

For this project, Dem-Master took on a number of agency operatives to assist with the soft stripping works, in turn, giving them experience within the Demolition industry.

One of the special requirements of this particular job was the safe dismantling and protection of the stained glass window which was located on one of the internal walls within one of the stairwells of the school just off the main reception area. Two of our operatives erected a scaffold within the building in order to reach the piece. This was taken apart in sections and kept in a safe, secure place in order to give it back to our client.

Following the demolition of the former school, Dem-Master excavated to 1m below the underside of slab level and backfilled with crushed material from the project. All inert materials from the site were crushed, spread and compacted back on to the site grounds.

A further 98.64% of materials removed from the former school have been recycled too!
