The Dem-Master team have been busy working in the King’s Theatre, Edinburgh.
This challenging project includes Asbestos removal, soft strip, downtakings, demolition and dismantling works within various locations in the Theatre, all in preparation for its refurbishment.
The main Theatre area will remain, and historic items have either been removed for cleaning purposes or protected in situ for reinstatement in our Client’s final scheme.
In order to achieve the required specification, our team have applied various demolition techniques. A summary of the main elements of our involvement include:
- Removal of all asbestos containing materials, including the stage fire curtain
- Removal of the entrance canopy
- Removal of fly tower system
- Removal of various floors including the stage floor
- Removal of upper half of upper circle seating including walkway/landing
- Removal of control room
- Removal of various Staircases and steps
- Removal of rooftop and parapet structure
- Removal of toilets and kitchen
- Removal of fittings and fixtures, joinery installations, etc. this includes protection of various items to be set aside for reuse within the development, i.e. Kiosks, doors, upper circle bar, flying drum, etc.
- Removal of Basement rooms including trap room and dressing room
The materials are being deposited via various drop zones in to designated skips prior to being taken to our local recycling facility in Bathgate for processing.
One of the particularly challenging elements of this project was breaking out the basement structures and the removal of materials. To enable this to work smoothly, we were required to break through the external basement wall in order to transfer the materials from the working area in to designated skips.
Logistically, due to the city centre location, the removal of materials from this site must be carefully planned as there is limited space on this site. In addition, there are various contractors working alongside our team, therefore, careful planning and coordination is required between all parties.
