Pitt Street, Glasgow (Holland Park)

Dem-Master were appointed as Demolition contractor for this extensive project at the former Strathclyde Police Headquarters building located at 173 Pitt Street, Glasgow.

The works included:

• Site Mobilisation
• Site Fencing including lane closures
• Removal of Asbestos Containing Materials
• Soft Strip
• Protection of SPEN transformer plant
• Machine Demolition using combination of standard and long reach Demolition rated excavators
• Breaking out of substructure, underbuild and basement floor slabs (retaining walls retained in-situ)
• Formation of perimeter restraint bunding

The building was a six-storey multi tenanted office block with concrete frame and a combination of curtain walling and masonry infill panels.  Walls to internal cores were of masonry construction with plasterboard partitions on timber / metal framing to office areas.  Plant rooms were located within the basement area of the building and there were water tanks located on the flat roofed areas of the north and south wings of the structure.

Situated among a number of businesses and hotels, community liaison was very important on this project.  Regular newsletters were issued and and visits were made to the neighbours to advise of each stage of the works and to inform of road/path closures, etc.

Dem-Master were recognised on this project by the Considerate Constructors Scheme for our innovative solution to reduce debris and dust migration.  We suspended a crane mat from our crawler crane as the machine demolition works progressed opposite the live hotel as an extra measure of protection.
